DIY PRACTICE

This will be a bit different from the last two practice sessions. This time YOU will be doing all the work.

Create a web page using Word®, Publisher® or any similar programme. Add all sorts of images, different fonts, lots of colours, put in a table or two - just as many different elements as you can think of.

DO NOT use your text editor at this stage or try to view any code at this stage.

Convert it with a Wizard to turn it into a web page. Now open it in as many browsers as you can. If you have friends using different browsers to your own, take a copy and try it on their computers.

Depending on what you have done it might look OK in one browser, but horrific in another, or bad in all, or good in all.

Now for the interesting part. Open the file with your text editor, Notepad, NoteTab® or whatever you use, and have a look at the code. Shock! Horror! What does it all mean?

The exercise is to go over each part of the strange code you will see and convert it to "proper" HTML. Work on a copy and keep the original in case you have to wipe everything and start again. Once you have worked your way through this you should be an expert.

You can repeat the exercise using Front Page® or any other web creation programme and have a look at the code there. You should have an option to view or edit the code.

If you want another challenge, copy the Main Index file (aamain.html) and try to reproduce it using different colours, words, layout, etc.

I urge you to read the lessons carefully. If you don't understand something, try printing out the page and go over the instructions step by step. I am happy to help if you are stuck but most of my correspondents simply haven't read the instructions or haven't checked their code. This is especially true of Forms and Frames. Don't forget, a single misplaced or omitted tag can create havoc.

Here endeth the lessons. From here you can check out the Downloads and Tips.

Good luck and thanks for using Oz Web Weaver.
